What Is the LBMA? The London Authority Behind Gold's Global Benchmark
WHAT IT MEANS
The LBMA — London Bullion Market Association — is the international trade association that oversees the wholesale over-the-counter market for gold and silver in London. It sets the globally recognized benchmark price for both metals through a twice-daily electronic auction and maintains the standards for what qualifies as investment-grade bullion.
Twice each business day — at 10:30 AM and 3:00 PM London time — LBMA member banks participate in an electronic auction to establish the LBMA Gold Price (formerly known as the London Gold Fix). This benchmark is used worldwide to settle contracts, value central bank reserves, price wholesale transactions, and calculate the value of gold-backed financial instruments.
The LBMA is not an exchange like COMEX. No standardized futures contracts trade there. Instead, it governs the over-the-counter market where banks, refineries, and large dealers trade physical bars directly with each other. The minimum transaction size is typically 400 troy ounce bars — approximately $1.16 million at current prices.
WHY IT MATTERS FOR INVESTORS
The LBMA affects every gold and silver buyer through three channels.
First, the benchmark price. Central banks, pension funds, ETF managers, and mining companies use the LBMA Gold Price to value their holdings. When your vault statement shows a portfolio value, the underlying calculation references either LBMA or COMEX pricing. These two benchmarks track closely but are not identical — the LBMA price is a snapshot taken at specific moments, while COMEX provides continuous pricing.
Second, the Good Delivery List. The LBMA maintains a list of approved refineries whose bars meet strict purity, weight, and quality standards. Only refineries on the Good Delivery List produce bars accepted in the wholesale market. When a gold bar carries a stamp from a Good Delivery refinery — Argor-Heraeus, PAMP Suisse, Valcambi, Asahi, or others — it means the bar meets the highest international standard for quality and provenance. This matters at resale: Good Delivery bars command tighter spreads and faster liquidity.
Third, responsible sourcing standards. The LBMA requires all member refineries to follow strict chain-of-custody and anti-money-laundering protocols. Gold entering the LBMA system has documented provenance from mine to bar. This is increasingly important for institutional investors with ESG mandates and for individual buyers who want assurance that their metal was ethically sourced.
HOW IT CONNECTS TO PRECIOUS METALS
For Alex Lexington clients, the LBMA operates in the background but affects every transaction. The bars and coins we source come from refineries on the Good Delivery List or from sovereign mints that use Good Delivery gold as their feedstock. When you buy a PAMP Suisse bar or a Gold Eagle struck from US Mint gold, the metal traces back through the LBMA supply chain.
Vault holdings valued on our platform reference current spot prices that reflect both LBMA and COMEX inputs. The two benchmarks ensure that your gold has a globally recognized value at any moment — not an appraised estimate, but a live market price backed by institutional trading volume.
THE BOTTOM LINE
The LBMA is the quality and pricing authority for the global gold market. Its twice-daily benchmark sets the reference price used by institutions worldwide. Its Good Delivery List ensures that investment-grade bars meet the highest standards. For any investor holding physical precious metals, the LBMA is the infrastructure that makes your gold globally liquid and universally valued.
