Home Safe vs Vault Storage for Gold and Silver

This comparison usually gets framed as convenience against security. That is not really the difference. The difference is insurance, what the container is actually rated to resist, and who else knows it is there. Cost matters too, but it is the least interesting variable and it is the one everyone leads with.

We sell vault storage, so read this with that in mind — which is exactly why the section on where vault storage falls down is as long as the others.

What a Home Safe Is Genuinely Good At

  • Immediate access. No appointment, no business hours, no phone call. For some people that is the whole argument, and it is a fair one.
  • No recurring fee. One purchase, then nothing.
  • Privacy. No counterparty holds a record of what you own.
  • Fire protection for documents, if the safe is genuinely fire-rated — and that is a separate rating from burglary resistance.
  • Small holdings. If you own a few ounces, storage fees are hard to justify and a decent safe is the sensible answer.

Where Home Safes Fall Down

The rating is usually lower than people assume

Most consumer safes and gun safes are RSC-rated — Residential Security Container — which certifies resistance to entry using common hand tools for a matter of minutes. That is a meaningful deterrent against an opportunist and very little against anyone who arrived intending to open it.

The ratings that describe serious burglary resistance are TL-15 and TL-30, meaning the door resisted attack by a skilled operator with specified tools for that many minutes of working time. Those safes are heavy, expensive, and not what is usually sold as a home safe.

Fire ratings are a separate axis. A safe can be excellent at fire and poor at burglary, and the marketing does not always make that obvious.

Weight is the quiet failure

A safe that is not bolted down and weighs less than several hundred pounds can be removed and opened somewhere else, at leisure. The rating of the door stops mattering once the safe is in the back of a vehicle.

The insurance gap does not close

This is the one that catches people. Standard homeowners policies apply special sub-limits to money, bullion and coins that are commonly a few hundred dollars in total — not per item. Buying a safe does not change that limit. Your metal is better protected physically and just as uninsured financially.

You can close the gap by scheduling the items on your policy or buying a standalone valuables policy. Insurers may require a specific safe rating, or an alarm, as a condition. Ask before you buy the safe rather than after. There is more detail on is my safe deposit box insured — the coverage rules are the same wherever the metal sits.

Other people know

Household members, anyone who helped move it, the delivery crew, and whoever they mention it to. Home storage concentrates value at the address where you and your family sleep, and that is a consideration that has nothing to do with metal prices.

What Vault Storage Is Good At

  • Insurance is part of the arrangement, not something you remember to organise. At Alex Lexington, holdings are insured at the actual declared value rather than a depreciated estimate — currently through a Jewelers Block program, transitioning to Lloyd's of London specie placement as our aggregate book grows.
  • Segregated and allocated. Your metal stays yours — never commingled into a pool, never lent out. What you deposit is what you withdraw.
  • Purpose-built security rather than a box in a closet.
  • Nothing at your address. The value is not where you live.
  • Clean handover. A documented custody arrangement is far easier for an executor to deal with than a safe whose combination died with its owner.

Where Vault Storage Falls Down

  • It is a recurring cost. A safe is bought once; storage is billed every year, and over a long enough horizon that adds up. Our rate is a single figure applied to your whole balance, set by declared value — the table is on the SECURE page, and it is worth doing the arithmetic against a safe you would otherwise buy.
  • Access takes an appointment. Not instant. Viewings can be arranged outside normal hours, but it is still a phone call and a drive.
  • You are trusting a counterparty. That is a real thing to weigh, and the honest response is not to dismiss it — it is to ask who the counterparty is, whether the metal is segregated, where it physically sits, and whether you can go and look at it. Ask us those questions. Ask them of anyone else you consider.
  • Someone has a record of what you own. Unavoidable in any insured, custodied arrangement.

A Reasonable Split

Most people who hold a meaningful amount end up doing both, and the dividing line is usually straightforward:

  • At home: documents, a small amount of metal you might actually want on short notice, jewelry in regular use.
  • Vaulted: the position you are holding for years, anything inherited that you have not made decisions about, and everything above what your homeowners policy will cover.

The test is not “how much do I trust a vault.” It is: if this disappeared tonight, would an insurer make me whole? Wherever the answer is no, that is the part to move.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a home safe good enough for gold and silver?

For small holdings, often yes. The limits are that most consumer safes are RSC-rated — resistant to hand tools for minutes rather than to a determined attack — that an unbolted safe can simply be carried away, and that buying a safe does not change your insurance sub-limit for bullion.

What safe rating do I need for bullion?

RSC is the common consumer rating; TL-15 and TL-30 describe genuine burglary resistance and are heavier and more expensive. Fire ratings are separate from burglary ratings. If you plan to schedule the metal on an insurance policy, ask the insurer what rating they require before buying.

Does homeowners insurance cover gold in a home safe?

Usually only to a very low sub-limit. Standard policies commonly cap money, bullion and coins at a few hundred dollars in total. A safe improves physical protection without changing that figure, so scheduling the items or buying a standalone valuables policy is what actually closes the gap.

Is vault storage worth the annual fee?

It depends on how much you hold. Below the point where your homeowners policy would make you whole, probably not. Above it, you are choosing between an annual fee and an uninsured position. Our rate is one figure applied to the whole balance, published on the SECURE page.

Is my metal mixed with other customers' metal?

Not at Alex Lexington. Storage is segregated and allocated — never commingled, never lent out — and what you deposit is what you withdraw.

How quickly can I get to metal in a vault?

By appointment during business hours, and viewings can be arranged outside them. It is not instant access, which is the genuine trade-off against a safe at home.

Should I keep some at home and some vaulted?

Many people do. Documents, jewelry in use and a small working amount at home; the long-term position and anything above your insurance limit in the vault.
