Safe Deposit Box Alternatives in Atlanta

Banks have been quietly getting out of the safe deposit box business. Several large national banks no longer offer boxes to new customers, branches that close rarely reopen the vault somewhere else, and customers are given a deadline to come and collect what is inside. If you have received one of those letters, or you have simply noticed there is no longer a box available anywhere near you, this page is about what to do next with the part of it that is gold, silver or platinum.

Alex Lexington has run a segregated, insured vault in Chamblee since long before this became a problem. We are a family firm in the precious metals trade since 1977, now in its third generation, and the vault is in our own building rather than a leased corner of someone else's.

Why the Boxes Are Disappearing

It is not a conspiracy, it is arithmetic. A safe deposit box generates a small annual fee, consumes floor space in expensive retail property, requires two staff members present for access, and carries legal exposure the bank would rather not hold. Branch networks are shrinking, and the vault is the first thing cut when a branch is consolidated.

The result is the same whichever bank you use: fewer boxes, longer waiting lists, and no guarantee your branch will still have a vault in five years.

The Part Most People Do Not Know

The contents of a safe deposit box are not FDIC-insured. FDIC insurance covers deposits — the money in your accounts. It does not cover what is inside a box in the same building. The FDIC says so itself.

Banks generally do not insure box contents either. Read your box agreement and you will usually find the bank disclaims liability for the contents beyond a very small amount, and sometimes entirely. So the standard arrangement is: your metal sits in a vault, and nobody is insuring it but you — and most homeowners policies cap jewelry and precious metals coverage sharply, with many excluding bullion outright. Check your own policy before you assume otherwise.

This is the single most useful thing to understand before comparing options. A bank box is a locked space. It is not custody, and it is not insurance.

What Private Vault Storage Does Differently

  • Segregated and allocated. Your metal is stored as your metal, never commingled into a pool and never lent out. What you deposit is what you withdraw.
  • Insured at declared value. Full insurance coverage at the actual declared value of your holdings, not a depreciated estimate. Current policy through a Jewelers Block program; transitioning to Lloyd's of London specie placement as our aggregate book grows.
  • It stays in Georgia. Your metal is held here, at our Chamblee office, not shipped to a depository in another state you will never visit.
  • You can look at it. Appointment-based vault access, and viewings can be arranged outside normal business hours.
  • The people who answer the phone own the firm. Three generations of it.

Pricing is one rate applied to your whole balance, set by your total declared value, published in full on the SECURE page so you can check the arithmetic yourself. We are not going to restate the brackets here and let two pages drift apart.

Is This Actually Right for You?

Sometimes it is not, and it is worth saying so plainly:

  • If you mainly store documents — deeds, wills, passports, birth certificates — a bank box or a good home fire safe may serve you better and cost less. We store precious metals, not paperwork.
  • If you hold a small amount of metal and it fits comfortably in a home safe you already own and have insured, storage fees may not be worth it. We will tell you that on the call rather than after you sign.
  • If you want your metal within arm's reach at all times, no custody arrangement will feel right, and that is a legitimate preference rather than a mistake.

Where it does make sense: holdings large enough that home insurance will not cover them, metal you intend to hold for years rather than trade, an inheritance you have not decided about yet, or a bank box you are being asked to vacate.

Moving From a Bank Box

  1. Start with a conversation. No inventory required first. Call 404.815.8893 or use the contact form — someone gets back to you within 24 hours on business days.
  2. Bring what is in the box. If some of it turns out to be jewelry rather than bullion, or coins worth more than their metal, we will tell you which is which before anything is stored or sold.
  3. Declare the value. Your declared value sets both your insurance coverage and your rate bracket.
  4. Custody begins. Segregated, allocated, at our Chamblee office, with access by appointment.

If you would rather sell some of it than store it, that is the same visit — see selling gold, silver and coins.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are safe deposit box contents FDIC-insured?

No. FDIC insurance covers deposits — the money in your accounts — not the contents of a safe deposit box. Banks generally disclaim liability for box contents in the box agreement as well, so unless you have arranged your own coverage, the contents are usually uninsured.

Why are banks closing safe deposit boxes?

Boxes earn a small annual fee, take up expensive retail floor space, require staff present for every access, and carry legal exposure banks would rather avoid. As branch networks shrink, the vault is usually the first service cut.

What is the alternative to a safety deposit box in Atlanta?

For precious metals, a private depository. Alex Lexington operates a segregated, insured vault at our Chamblee office, with metal stored as your metal rather than pooled, insured at declared value, and accessible by appointment. Full pricing is on our SECURE page.

Is my metal mixed with other people's?

No. Storage is segregated and allocated — never commingled, never lent out. What you deposit is what you withdraw.

Where is the metal actually kept?

At our own Chamblee office in Georgia, not shipped to an out-of-state depository. You can arrange to see it.

Can I visit my holdings?

Yes, by appointment. Vault viewings can be arranged outside normal business hours for private-client meetings.

What does it cost?

One rate applied to your entire balance, with the bracket set by your total declared value. The full rate table is published on our SECURE page rather than repeated here, so there is only one place for it to be right.

Do you store documents or other valuables?

No. SECURE is for precious metals. If your main need is documents, a bank box or a quality home fire safe will likely serve you better, and we would rather say that than sell you the wrong thing.
